¿Quién soy?
The didactic concerts have emerged as a result of my experience as an English teacher at the Official School of Languages (EOI), as a Geography and History teacher on the MEC/British Council bilingual project and also my recent work as Education Consultant for Foreign Languages in the Teacher Training Centre in Santander...and of course from my love of playing a good song!
From my hometown of Canterbury I went on to study Geography (BSc) at Southampton University and then completed training as a secondary school teacher (PGCE) at Bristol University and gained my qualified teacher status (QTS) there. While studying my teaching qualification I spent three months as an Erasmus student in Santander in Cantabria, Northern Spain. After completing QTS I returned to Spain and started to work as an English teacher (T.E.F.L.) with International House. For a number of years I worked in a number of different English academies and as a self employed teacher before I passed the Spanish state civil service exam to gain a post as an English teacher at the Spanish Official School of Languages.
With my combined background as a Geography specialist and T.E.F.L. teacher I was appointed in 2004 as Social Science teacher on the Spanish Ministry of Education (MEC)/British Council bilingual project to teach Geography and History in a state secondary school in Santander. The project continues to be a reference at an international level for bilingual education or Content and Language Integrated Learning (C.L.I.L.) and has been an extraordinary experience for me personally.
Since 2004 I have given teacher training in C.L.I.L. methodology in various parts of Spain as well as elsewhere in Europe. I have also been involved in reviewing and writing materials for both social sciences and natural sciences for publishers that now strive to provide quality materials for the growing demand for C.L.I.L. education.
From 2016 - 2021 I worked as Foreign Languages Teacher Training Consultant for the region of Cantabria´s Local Education Authority in the Teacher Training Centre in Santander.
Estos conciertos didácticos han surgido como resultado de mi experiencia como profesor de inglés en la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, profesor de geografía e historia en el proyecto bilingüe MEC/British Council y mi experiencia como asesor de Lenguas Extranjeras en el CEP Santander... y porque me encanta tocar una buena canción.
Desde mi pueblo natal de Canterbury fui a la Universidad de Southampton a estudiar Geografía, después en la Universidad de Bristol completé el Máster de Educación, antes de terminar mis prácticas como profesor de secundaria. Mientras estudiaba el Máster vine a Santander, durante tres meses, con una beca Erasmus y un tiempo después volví para empezar a trabajar en la academia de inglés International House. A lo largo de unos cuantos años trabajé como profesor de inglés en academias y también como autónomo, antes de aprobar la oposición como profesor de inglés de la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas.
Con mi perfil de profesor de inglés, como lengua extranjera y mi experiencia como profesor de geografía, fui contratado en 2004 como profesor de Ciencias Sociales dentro del proyecto bilingüe MEC/British Council en un instituto de educación secundaria en Santander. El proyecto sigue como una referencia en esta nueva modalidad de enseñanza Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenido y Lengua Extranjera (A.I.C.L.E.) y fue una experiencia personal maravillosa.
Desde el 2.004 también he sido invitado a dar ponencias de formación tanto en España como en Europa. También he trabajado en crear y revisar materiales educativos para Ciencias Sociales y Ciencias Naturales. Los recursos para la enseñanza bilingüe siguen siendo un tema problemático. Del 2.016 hasta el 2.021 he trabajado como asesor de Lenguas Extranjeras en el Centro de Profesorado de Santander para La Consejería de Educación de Cantabria.
I bought a second hand guitar when I was 19 years old and taught myself to busk with the help of a book of Beatles songs giving the chords and the lyrics. Since then there have been few days when I haven´t picked up an acoustic guitar to strum a tune or two. Most of my classes of English students have heard me play a song now and then and I´ve joined up with other musicians to offer end of term gigs as well as head out into bars and cafes in Santander and Cantabria for anybody who appreciates a good cover song in English.
Songs have always been a great way to motivate learners of English of all ages and levels. The challenges of understanding the lyrics both as a written and an oral text are added to the fun of trying to pick up the rhythm of the music and pronounce and articulate choruses (and sometimes even the verses!) From my experience teaching Geography and History in English to Spanish students it´s also become apparent that music also helps learners understand and reflext on themes and ideas beyond the linguistic notions. As a result of my experience these didactic concerts are imbued with both C.L.I.L. and E.L.F. and so far… feedback from both teachers and students has been positive.
Compré una guitarra acústica de segunda mano cuando tenía 19 años y de forma autodidactica, con un libro de canciones y acordes de los Beatles, aprendí a interpretar las canciones que más me gustaban. Desde entonces raro es el día que no cojo dicho instrumento para cantar. A lo largo de los años la mayoría de mis alumnos me han escuchado cantar en clase y con otros músicos he participado en conciertos fin de trimestre/curso y también he interpretado versiones de canciones en inglés en bares y cafeterías en Santander y Cantabria.
Las canciones siempre han sido una forma magnífica de motivar a los estudiantes de inglés de todas las edades y niveles. El reto de comprender las letras como un texto escrito y oral se complementa con la diversión de intentar acoplarse al ritmo de la música y pronunciar y articular los estribillos (¡e incluso las estrofas!). Por mi experiencia de enseñar geografía e historia en inglés con alumnos españoles me ha quedado claro que la música también ayuda a aprender conceptos e ideas más allá de las nociones léxicas de la lengua inglesa. Como resultado de mi experiencia estos conciertos didácticos entrañan AICLE e inglés como lengua extranjera. Hasta hoy…la valoración por parte de profes y alumnos ha sido positiva.
